Sputnik Sweetheart Thoughts

I wonder if Murakami had good relationships with females. I think the way Miu is split might be representative of the different "sides" a person has. One being the persona that people present to strangers and acquaintances, which is generally nicer overall. However after you get to someone, you see more of their flaws and "true" self. In some cases, the difference is only slight like Miu's hair change and not being able to sexually connect with anyone. In other cases, people can be a whole another person.

In the story, Miu looks through a window and saw her doppelganger doing things that she would never do. The window connected her to another world, but unfortunately she lost something after accessing the window (other world). On the other hand, mirrors don't bring you to a different world. It shows your own world.

Also I think having thoughts on whether our world is real or just a long, long dream/illusion is a fairly common theme think/write about. The protagonist is left to wonder in end which side is the real world after Miu tells the story of her split. The Sputnik Sweetheart reminds me a little bit of an old Chinese story where someone dreamed of a butterfly, but when he woke up, he didn't know if he was just a butterfly dreaming of being a human.
