Iwamoto Postmodernism Discussion Questions

1. How would you define postmodernism? What characterizes a postmodern work? Dost postmodernism look different in Western literature from Japanese literature? If so, why?

2. Would you classify the influences Murakami takes from his western sources as inherently postmodern? Were they taken to be influences of postmodernism, or is a pattern of postmodernism amongst his influences merely a coincidence? How does Murakami feel about postmodernism?

3. How would you describe Boku as a character? Does his existence serve to give the reader a blank slate of a narrator to step into in order to interact with the story deeper, or does he move through the story as an individual with a distinct personality?

4. Murakami has stated that the sheep from A Wild Sheep Chase was used "primarily in the spirit of a game, without any deep significance." Does this change the meaning of the story, or what the sheep represents in the eyes of the readers?
